Waterfront wood is the hardest working wood on any property here, and it is worth staining once it has been cleaned and dried out properly.
How the job runs
Clean and strip the growth
The wood is cleaned first, taking off mildew, algae and the grey weathered layer so there is a sound surface underneath.
Let the wood dry and prep it
Wood has to dry properly before stain goes near it. I come back once it is ready, then handle sanding, fasteners and any spot prep the boards need.
Apply the stain evenly
Stain is worked into the boards evenly, including rails, steps and edges, so the finish looks consistent across the whole structure.
Common questions
Do I need the deck cleaned before staining?
Yes, and that is the point of this service. Stain over dirty or mildewed wood will not bond properly, so the clean and prep are part of the job rather than an extra you arrange elsewhere.
How long between cleaning and staining?
The wood has to be dry all the way through, not just dry to the touch, and our humidity makes that slower. I schedule the staining for once the boards are genuinely ready.
Can you stain a boat dock?
Yes. Docks get the same clean, dry and stain sequence as a deck, which matters even more on wood that sits over water.
